A man in a ghostly mask sings to his sweetheart. A crowd of cat-people crawl and cavort across the stage. These are famous scenes from The Phantom of the Opera and Cats. Both sprang from the mind of maestro Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the most successful composers of musicals of his generation.

Lloyd Webber’s success comes from combining classical music with catchy pop and rock influences. He also adds a lot of visual spectacle to his shows, ensuring the audience gets a feast for the ears as well as for the eyes.

Due to this charm, The Phantom of the Opera and Cats are the two longest-running shows in the history of Broadway. Both musicals have been performed over 10,000 times. Lloyd Webber received a Tony Award, which recognizes excellence in live theater in New York’s famous Broadway theater district, for both shows. His musical Evita won him another Tony and an Oscar when it was adapted into a movie in 1996.

Music runs in Lloyd Webber’s family. His father was the director of the London College of Music, his mother was a piano teacher, and his brother is a renowned cellist. Lloyd Webber dropped out of Oxford University to study at the Royal College of Music. There he met lyricist Tim Rice, with whom he would collaborate on many musicals.

Their first show was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which was an immediate success. It retold a Bible story but added elements of disco and Elvis Presley-style rock ‘n’ roll. A similar concept was used for Jesus Christ superstar, which began Lloyd Webber’s tradition of releasing full cast albums of his shows.

He’s not finished yet, however, and it’s only a matter of time before his next hit musical delights audiences around the world.
