Marc Chagall is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He is known for his great use of light and color. Pablo Picasso once said Chagall is the painter who best understands how to use color. As a creative artist, Chagall not only created numerous paintings, but also made stained glass for buildings and built sets for plays.

Chagall’s works usually mix the real and the imaginary. The three most common topics in his works are simple Jewish country life, love, and religion. His paintings, like I and the Village, draw upon scenes from the small village of Vitebsk, Russia, where he was born. He showed a deep passion for his homeland. Another source for his art was his wife Bella. She gave him ideas for paintings about love. He often painted himself and Bella as young lovers flying happily. His religious paintings, however, reflected the terrible wars he lived through. He painted Christ on the cross to mourn people who suffered from wars.

Marc Chagall was born into a Jewish family in Vitebsk, Russia in 1887. He showed an interest in painting when he was a child, but his poor family couldn’t pay for art lessons. Chagall worked hard to save up money and finally sent himself to art school in St. Petersburg when he was nineteen. In 1910, he moved to France to further develop his talents, and soon became known for his art.
马克．夏卡尔于1887年出生于俄罗斯维台普斯克的一个犹太家庭。他在年幼时就展现对绘画的兴趣，然而他贫穷的家庭无法负担艺术课程的费用。夏卡尔辛勤的工作存钱，终于在他19岁的时候进入圣彼得堡的艺术学校就读。在1910年，他搬到法国以进一步发展他的才能，并且很快因他的艺术成就而闻名。
Chagall’s life changed when World War II swept across Europe. Many Jews were killed by the Nazis. Chagall had to escape to America because he was a famous Jewish artist. Unfortunately, Bella died during this period. Her images appeared continually in Chagall’s pictures and showed how much he missed her.

Chagall left more than 3,000 works when he passed away in 1985. He never gave up painting even in times of hardship. All the ups and downs in his life were turned into touching paintings that continue to inspire young artists.
