A giant rubber duck floated into Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor this year, making the busy port a huge bathtub. This scene was not a first, however, as the Rubber Duck has been surprising cities since 2007.

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman is the man behind the Rubber Duck. His first commission was to paint a mural on the cooling tower of Kernwasser Wonderland in Germany. This 15,000-square-meter painting inspired him to continue to make large art pieces. Now his works can be found around the world. He tied 10,000 sandals together to create Fat Monkey in Sao Paulo. The 15-meter ape lies outdoors in a park and catches the eye of any passers-by. The artist also created Big Yellow Rabbit, which is made of thousands of roof shingles and is in Orebro, Sweden.

Unlike many modern artists, Hofman chooses everyday subject that everyone can recognize, especially animals. These large cartoon-like creations always get a lot of attention. He feels that their cute appearance and giant size can bring people happiness and remind them of their childhood.

不同于许多现代艺术家，霍夫曼选择人人都能辨识的日常生活主题，特别是动物。这些卡通般的巨大创作总是能吸引许多注意力。他认为作品的可爱外型和巨大尺寸能为人们带来欢乐并使人们忆起童年。

Although Hofman’s large and colorful creations have a playful quality, the artist has a serious attitude about his work. He says that his art, like the Rubber Duck, is made for the public. Several companies offered to buy the duck, but Hofman rejected them all.

As a result, Hofman’s art helps strangers to make contact with each other again.
