Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne is famous for her tomboy fashion and thick eyeliner, but she prefers to put her music ahead of her image. Fans have rewarded her focus on singing and songwriting by making her one of the most popular musicians in the world. Ever since the release of her first collection of songs in 2002, called Let Go, she has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Born in Canada in 1984, Lavigne began singing church songs with her mother as a toddler. Her parents noticed she had a talent for music and supported her dream of making it big as a singer. As a girl, she was influenced by female vocalists with powerful voices, like Janis Joplin and Shania Twain. By the time she was 15, she was singing her own songs at county fairs.
