The most remarkable treasures can be found in our own backyard. This is the case with the oil paper umbrellas from the Hakka village of Meinung. There, people handcraft these umbrellas using Meng Zong bamboo (孟宗竹) and tung oil (桐油). This allows them to be both durable and waterproof under harsh weather conditions. Yet, what makes the umbrellas truly stand out are the designs atop their canopies. Beautiful images of landscapes, animals, or scenes from famous Chinese literature can be found on each umbrella.
最不凡的宝藏可能就在自家的后院，美浓客家庄的油纸伞就是一个例子。在那里，人们以手工的方式、用孟宗竹和桐油制作纸伞，这不仅让纸伞更耐用，也能在严酷的气候下达到防水的功用。然而，让纸伞显眼的是它遮蓬上的设计，在每支雨伞上都能看到中国著名文学中的美丽山水、动物或景象。
However, oil paper umbrellas are more than just an artistic accessory for a rainy day. In the Chinese language, the pronunciation for the term “oil paper” is “you zhi,” which sounds similar to the phrase “to have children.” In the past, parents could give one to their daughter on her wedding day, in hopes that she would be blessed with many children. With so much craftsmanship and symbolism behind these umbrellas, it is easy to see why they have become a source of pride for the Hakka people.
然而，油纸伞绝不只是雨天的艺术配件而已。在中文里，「油纸」这个词的发音是「you zhi」，听起来跟有孩子很相似，在过去，父母会在女儿结婚当天给她一把纸伞，愿她有幸得到很多孩子。这些雨伞背后有着那么多的工艺技术和象征意义，不难看出为何油纸伞会成为客家人自豪的来源。
