Imagine a blue green lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. No smog, no noise, no other people – just untouched nature. Such beautiful places can easily be found in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
An azure pool glowing like a jewel surrounded by steep, glacier-covered mountains, Lake Louiseis one such lake. Famous for its beautiful scenery, it’s the premier attraction of Banff National Park. The area is perfect for hiking, and in winter, it’s also a premier skiresort. The magnificent castle standing proudly on the edge of the lake is Chateau Lake Louise, one of Canada’s best hotels.
An equally beautiful but lesser-known lake in the Canadian Rockies is the turquoise blue Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Ten mountains, each rising more than 3,000 meters, tower over this tiny lake. Hiking up one of these mountains allows a stunning view of the lake set amongst evergreen forests, mountains, and glaciers. Paddling a canoe across the lake gives you the chance to truly experience the solitude and peace of nature.
There are hundreds more such beautiful lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Visitors often wonder why these lakes have such rich, beautiful green and blue colors. The lakes are fed by glaciers, and mineral-rich silt from these glaciers gives the lakes their jewel-like tones. This also means that actually swimming in one is only for the hardy. Even at the height of summer, the surface water of Lake Louise is an icy 9 degree Celsius!
The beauty of these mountain lakes is unforgettable, and getting to them is easy, too. Most of the lakes are easily accessible by car or train. The Rockies are waiting for you!
