A pristine and culturally intact destination must certainly be far away and difficult to get to, right? Wrong. Getting to Yilan County used to be a two-hour trek from Taipei, but thanks to Taiwanese ingenuity and determination, this is no longer the case. The completion of the Husehshan Tunnel, the longest in Southeast Asia, has turned a difficult two-hour journey into 45 minutes jaunt!

As you arrive in Yilan, you will immediately be taken with its natural beauty. Taiping Mountain, located in Datong Township, is one of Taiwan’s three major forest recreation areas. Once a center for logging, Taiping has been beautifully rehabilitated. Abundant cypress and hemlock trees, as well as hundreds of smaller species, make this one of Northern Taiwan’s most diverse forests. Nestled in these mountains is Tsuifeng Lake, the largest alpine lake in Taiwan.

Another spectacular example of Northern Taiwan’s original forest ecologies is Fushan Botanical Garden, in Yuanshan Township. This 410-hectare reserve is the island’s largest botanical park. In order to maintain the pure character of this park, the Yilan government is enforcing strict regulations concerning permits, the number of visitors per day and access to its trails. As a result, park wildlife is flourishing and many rare animals and plants can be found there. Ponds contain underwater and floating plants as well as water birds such as Mandarin ducks.

位于员山乡的福山植物园，则是北台湾原始林生态区的另一典范。这个占地410公顷的自然保护区是台湾最大的植物园。为了保持园内的天然风貌，宜兰县政府实施严格管制，限制每日入园游客的数量。管制结果使园中野生动物的数量大增，还可发现一些稀有的动植物。园内池子除了水底及水面上的植物外，还有像鸳鸯这类的水鸟嬉游其中。

As an agricultural county, Yilan has many festivals focusing on the richness of its land and its people. The “Yilan Green Expo” offers the city dweller a glimpse of its natural wealth, which shows many rare and local plants. The “Yilan International Chidren’s Folklore and Folk Game Festival” is an international whirlwind of performances and cultural exchange. You can dance folk dance on stage with groups from Europe and Latin America or play games with child dancers from Oceania! The Suao Cold Springs Carnival is a great time to experience the rare cold springs found there. At a year-round temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, the carbonic waters can definitely cool you off in summer!

In addition to the festivals, Yilan’s food specialties are something you shouldn’t miss. Flat smoked duck was originally developed to preserve the meat. Once a product of necessity, this delicacy is now famous island-wide. The smoked duck, pork liver, sweet bean jelly and candied kumquats are known as “the four treasures of Yilan.” Hot springs sponge gourd and hot springs water oats are also prized for their sweet flavor and texture.
