Some say true love never dies. Others say the course of true love never runs smoothly. Both of these statements are true in the story of Ma Yuan-tai and his wife, Chang Bao-yu.
有些人说真爱永远不会消逝，有些人则说真爱之路总是特别坎坷。在马元泰与他的妻子张宝玉的故事中，这两种说法都成立。
In 1948, China was fighting a terrible civil war. To escape the fighting, Mr. Ma took his wife to Taiwan, leaving their daughter behind. As the war drew to a close, their daughter fell ill, so Ms. Chang returned to China to take care of her. Unfortunately, Ms. Chang wasn’t allowed to return to Taiwan or contact her husband.
1948年，中国正经历严重的内战。为了躲避战争，马先生带着他的妻子来到台湾，把女儿留在了大陆。但战争快结束时，他们的女儿生病了，于是张女士返回中国去照顾她。很不幸地，张女士便从此无法再回到台湾或是与她的丈夫联络。
Mr. Ma was heartbroken. His friends encourage him to remarry, but he refused. He was determined to be reunited with his wife someday.
马先生整颗心都碎了。他的朋友鼓励他再婚，但是他拒绝了。他下定决心有一天要与他的妻子团圆。
Fifty-one years later, in 2000, a friend gave him some good news. His wife had been located, and she wanted her husband to contact her. She hadn’t remarried either, and was waiting for her one true love.
五十一年后的公元2000年，一位朋友为他捎来一些好消息，找到他的妻子了，而且她希望她的先生能与他联系。她也一直没有再婚，始终等待着她唯一的真爱。
Mr. Ma immediately telephoned his wife. Upon hearing her voice, he couldn’t speak. His hands shook, and he started to weep. He hung up, composed himself, and called again, but he still couldn’t talk. After two more tries, he was able to tell his wife that he would see her soon. They met in China and returned to Taiwan, where they now live happily together.
马先生随即打电话给他的太太。一听到她的声音，他便哽咽地说不出话来。他的双手颤抖，接着他就开始哭泣。他挂断电话试着镇定下来，然后重新再拨一次，但是他仍然无法言语。又经过了两次努力，他终于能告诉他的太太，他想很快就能与她见面。他们在中国见了面，然后回到台湾来，现在正一起过着幸福的日子。
In our rapidly changing world, it’s nice to know some things never change. The love between Yuan-tai and Bao-yu overcame fifty-one years that split a nation. That’s worth remembering.
在这个瞬息万变的年代，很高兴知道有些事永远不会改变。马元泰和张宝玉之间的爱跨越了造成一个国家分裂的五十一年，而这份爱是很值得铭记的。
