A long time ago, the noble King Richard ruled over England. He was an honest man, and the people loved him. Yet, one day Richard had to go overseas to fight a war. Before leaving, he asked his brother, Prince John, to take care of the people. However, John was a greedy man. His only concern was filling his own pockets. Therefore, he imposed high taxes on all the people throughout the land. To help him collect the money, John acquired the services of the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham. Together, they made life miserable for the people of England. However, not all hope was lost. Deep within the forest lived a man named Robin Hood. He was very clever and skilled with a bow and arrow. He did not want to live under Prince John’s oppression, so he fought the Sheriff and his knights with his band of merry men. This made the Sheriff furious and vow to catch him.

One day, a potter was pulling his cart through the forest. Robin leaped in front of the cart and asked where he was heading. The man said he was on his way to the market in Nottingham to sell his pots. This gave Robin an idea. He wanted to switch clothes with the potter, sneak into Nottingham, and cause trouble for the Sheriff. The potter was well aware of the Sheriff’s cruelty and agreed to the plan. Within an hour, Robin was in the market. While selling the pots, he noticed one of the Sheriff’s knights. He told the knight to inform the Sheriff that he had news of Robin Hood. When the Sheriff heard this, he became excited at the idea of catching Robin once and for all. When he arrived at the market, he asked, “Potter, do you know where Robin Hood is? Take me to hislocation and I will give you a reward.” Robin agreed. Soon enough, he, the Sheriff, and the Sheriff’s knights were on their way into the forest.

Once they all had ridden deep into the forest, Robin took out his horn and blew into it. Suddenly, they were surrounded by Robin’s merry men. The men quickly disarmed the Sheriff and his knights. Robin then removed his disguise and let out a laugh. The Sheriff turned red with anger, and screamed, “You’ll pay for this!” Robin teased, “You’re the one who will be doing the paying today.” He then took the reward money away from the Sheriff and sent them back to Nottingham. Robin gave the money to the potter. Even though it was a small fortune, the potter promised to only take what he needed and use the rest to help the poor in his hometown. Back at Nottingham Castle, word of what happened in the forest had spread. Before long, people were gossiping about how Robin Hood had made the Sheriff look like a fool. In their eyes, it was one more tale to add to the growing legend of Robin Hood.
