Judy Abbott was a young girl who had grown up in an orphanage. She was bright and had a gift for writing. When Judy turned 18, the orphanage could no longer take care of her. One day, a caretaker came to her and said, “One of our trustees has realized your talent. Therefore he has offered to sponsor your college education. He will pay for everything and give you a monthly allowance.” The caretaker continued, “However, you must write a letter to him every month, telling him of your experiences there. Yet, you shouldn’t expect a reply.”
Judy was overjoyed to have this marvelous opportunity. She asked, “Who is my generous benefactor?” The caretaker only replied, “He wants his identity to be a secret until you finish your studies. However, he just visited our orphanage.” Judy remembered seeing this man from the back only. However, she did notice how he cast a long shadow in the wall behind him, slightly resembling a spider. Therefore, Judy thought to herself, “I shall call him Daddy Long Legs.”

Although Daddy Long Legs never wrote back, Judy knew that her benefactor was very much involved in her new life. She began to think of him as somewhat of a father figure.

Over time, Judy’s friendship with Jervis deepened. She trusted him and often turned to him for advice. Then, during her senior year in school, Jervis confessed his love for Judy and proposed to her. To his surprise, she refused. Judy felt her background as an orphan made her unworthy to be his wife. Although she was heartbroken, she remained strong and focused on her studies.
After a few months, Judy graduated. She could finally meet her benefactor. Sealed within an envelope were a time and place to meet. When she arrived at the address, she was escorted into a dimly lit room. There, she saw a long shadow just as she did years before at the orphanage. However, to her amazement, at the end of the shadow was her dear friend Jervis! He had been her Daddy Long Legs all along. Suddenly, Judy realized just how much Jervis cared for her. He knew of her background, yet he still loved her. Filled with happiness, Judy knew she would never leave his side again.
