Rain pours down over the fields and hills surrounding Victor Frankenstein’s apartment in Germany, tapping against his windows. The scientist, who is studying chemistry in university, has discovered a way to bring dead flesh back to life. To create a person, he’s stolen human body parts, and some animal parts. One night, he finally pieces the creature together and gives it the spark of life. The creature slowly begins to open his eyes. He lets out a groan and then his arms and legs begin to move.
Frankenstein, for better or worse, has done it. But upon seeing how ugly his creation is, with its transparent skin, watery eyes, black lips and great height, Frankenstein becomes frightened. He goes to his room but soon after sees the monster standing at the foot of his bed, smiling at him. As opposed to greeting the creature, Frankenstein runs in terror, leaving the creature behind. The monster is confused and decides to wander out of the apartment and into the nearby woods.

The monster lives alone in the forest. He tries to become friends with a family, but his ugliness makes them attack him and he runs away. While wandering in the forest, he rescues a girl from drowning but later gets shot by her father. The creature, now bitter, decides to take revenge and heads for his creator’s hometown. The monster accidentally runs into Frankenstein’s younger brother in the woods and kills him.
Soon after, Frankenstein receives a letter about the murder and returns home. When he arrives, he sees the monster in the distance. Although Frankenstein is somewhat angry, he also feels guilty; if he hadn’t created the minster, his brother would still be alive. Frankenstein confronts the monster. Instead of fighting though, he lets the creature tell the story of his life. After the monster tells his tale, he demands that Frankenstein make a female companion, so he wouldn’t be alone. Frankenstein, knowing how hopeless his creation is, agrees to do it.

While making the female creature, Frankenstein begins to think he’s making a mistake. He feels he can’t control the monsters. He imagines an entire race of them being born because of his work so he destroys the female creation. The monster, seeing this from the window, becomes enraged and kills Frankenstein’s newlywed wife and then flees east into Russia.
The scientist no longer feels sorry for the monster and chases him through the snows of Siberia. The monster heads out among the ice sheets and icebergs of the Arctic Circle. The large, floating chunks of ice make Frankenstein’s path dangerous. He is slowly dying of exhaustion and is picked up by a passing ship, where he dies soon after.
That night the monster finds Frankenstein dead in his cabin. He cries and regrets what he has done, because he has killed the only person who understands him. Now, he is absolutely alone. He sets off to burn himself to death to end his suffering so no one else will ever see him again.
