Buck is a strong dog, half sheepdog and half St. Bernard, who lives on a farm in California. He leads a nice life there, but one day, everything changes. The farm’s gardener steals Buck and sells him to dog traders.

Buck is beaten to obey the traders’ commands along with many other dogs. Then they are sold to two Canadian mail carriers as sled dogs. The two men put Buck on a boat and they leave for Canada. When Buck arrives in the frigid land, he finds that it is an unforgiving place. As soon as the dogs get off the boat, one of them is attacked and killed by a group of huskies. Buck sees this and swears to himself that he won’t die without a fight.

Buck slowly regains his wild instincts in Canada. He roams for food, learns to fight, and burrows himself into the snow at night. Of all the dogs on the team, Buck dislikes only one: the team leader, Spitz.

As the team of sled dogs pushes across the tundra delivering mail, Buck keeps thinking about how much he dislikes Spitz. The head dog is cruel and starts fights with the other dogs without reason. One day, Buck cannot put up with Spitz’s abuses anymore and attacks him. The two become engaged in a serious brawl, and Spitz meets his match in Buck. After Spitz is defeated, the other dogs attack and kill him.

Buck replaces Spitz as the team’s leader and they become more efficient with him in charge. However, one day the mail carriers turn the dogs over to three American gold hunters-Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. The trio has little experience with sled dogs. They push the dogs too hard, and overfeed them as well. Soon they run out of food for the dogs.

In their darkest hour, the gold hunters meet John Thornton, an experienced outdoorsman. He warns the miners not to cross a river up ahead, as the ice is melting, but Hal ignores Thornton’s warning.

Buck is so hungry and exhausted that he refuses to cross the river. Hal beats Buck for not continuing. In that moment, Thornton sees that Buck is so special that he takes him from the gold hunters. Hal still urges the sled on, until the ice cracks. The miners and the other dogs fall through the ice and are consumed by the cold water below.

Thornton cares for Buck and helps him regain his health. Buck is so thankful that he becomes fully devoted to his new master. He even wins $1,600 for Thornton by pulling a massive sled in a competition.

One night, Thornton falls asleep at his camp and Buck wanders into the forest. When he returns, he is terrified to find that Native Americans who live nearby have killed Thornton. Buck kills several of the natives before running off into the woods. He joins a pack of wolves and turns into a fearsome leader. Yet each year, Buck returns to the spot where Thornton died to honor his master, and then returns once again to the wild.
