Animal Planet’s new program Glory Hounds is a special feature about dogs that are much more than pets – they are heroes. For this show, camera crews traveled to Afghanistan and followed Marines who handle military working dogs (MWDs). These canines are specially trained to sniff out weapons and enemies. They are a vital tool for preventing armed forces from walking straight into a fatal trap.

动物星球频道的新节目《军犬的荣耀》是一部关于狗的特辑，别以为牠们只是宠物，牠们可是大英雄。为了这出节目，摄影团队到阿富汗跟随着指挥军用工作犬的美军陆战队。这些军犬是特别训练来嗅出武器及敌人，牠们是极其重要的利器，用以预防武装部队直接踏入致命陷阱。

For the men who employ the dogs, having a four-legged companion can save their skin in dangerous situations. Dogs have sensitive noses that are able to smell many kinds of explosives, especially those used in improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

对于使用军犬的人来说，拥有一只条腿四条腿的同伴能助他们从危险的处境中全身而退。狗的臭子很灵敏，能够闻出许多种类的爆炸物，尤其是简易爆炸装置（俗称土制炸弹）。

This two-hour special is both heart-warming and horrifying. It follows four MWD handlers through their time in the most dangerous provinces of Afghanistan. The men and dogs must develop special connections to persevere, survive, and defeat their enemies. Sadly, military dogs, just like military men, can fall in battle. Yet, whether they make it home or not, they are all honored for their service.

The first handler introduced on Glory Hounds is Kent Ferrel, along with his bomb-sniffing dog Zora. When Ferrel’s unit goes out on a mission, he and his pooch are the first to enter a building. Although the assignment is risky, the mission goes smoothly. Sadly, Zora is killed later by an enemy grenade blast. Ferrel mourns his fallen friend but is proud of his dog’s heroic service.

Elsewhere, Durward Shaw and his dog Falco are sent to search around their base for IEDs. When Falco smells something suspicious, he sits just as he had been trained. The Marines are then able to detonate the explosive from a safe distance. Falco’s actions have probably saved someone’s life this day.

Ferrel, Shaw, and the other Marines onGlory Hounds confess how deeply they care for the animals. Their stories leave no doubt that dogs are man’s best friends－especially in a time of war.
