Last April, a giant rose out of the sea at Albert Dock in Liverpool, England. Several kilometers away, a giant young girl awoke at Stanley Park. Over the next few days, many monstrous figures roamed the streets, encountered one another, and transported the people of Liverpool into a world of awe and imagination. This fantastic sight was the latest performance by the French street theater company Royal de Luxe.

Based in Nantes, France, Royal de luxe builds and manipulates puppets of gargantuan proportion. Their giant show began in 1993 when the theater company built an 11-meter marionette. The shows, which can last several days, often commemorate important moments in history. A 2010 show in Germany took place to recall the fall of the Berlin Wall, and a 2011 performance in Mexico honored that country’s 200th anniversary of independence. As Liverpool has strong connections to the RMS Titanic, Royal de Luxe came to the city in 2012 to stage the show Sea Odyssey, depicting the epic, fateful sinking of that ship 100 years ago.

Royal de luxe’s Sea Odyssey begins a hundred years ago, when a giant aboard the Titanic drowns in the wreck. His daughter searches for news about the tragedy, and his brother dives to the bottom of the ocean to find him. The diver discovers a letter there for his brother’s daughter and returns to land to deliver the message. Finally, the somber relatives embrace to comfort each other.

Watching this epic tale end brought many people in the audience to tears. Although the puppets are huge, requiring dozens of puppeteers, their facial movements and silicate gestures convey powerful emotions. Adults can look up at these towering puppets and feel like children again. Royal de luxe’s artistic director Jean-Luc Courcoult said he believes that seeing giant puppets helps us dream of a world where anything is possible.

Sea Odyssey entertained audiences, but also helped local businesses. Over the weekend of the performance, a million visitors came to the city, which greatly increased profits at shops, restaurants, and museums. In no small way were the giants of Royal de luxe a spectacular success.
