Robots are invading our factories, hospitals, and homes. Calm down－they are here to help. Roomba, the rolling vacuum robot, is keeping living room floors clean. Chef Chui, a mechanical noodle chopper, is serving up delicious dishes. In Japan, a “nursebot” tends to the sick and the elderly.

Robots are taking on jobs that bring them closer to humans, but how should we react to this increasing intimacy? Some movies, such as /, Robot and The Matrix, show man’s natural discomfort with machines becoming too powerful. Nevertheless, robots perform heroic rescue missions, dangerous jobs, and difficult medical operations. The number of ways machines are helping people grows every day.

Even though robots cannot perfectly mimic the hearts and minds of humans, they can offer companionship. This theme is explored in Robot & Franks, a recent film about a retired man who develops a friendship with his robot helper. Machines like this might one day replace dogs as “man’s best friend.” Hopefully, we can all look forward to a future with robots that will do housework and make us laugh, but without making a mess.
