There are new invaders raging across China. They’re not Huns, or Mongols, but sandstorms. Every year, in spring, the desert plains of northern China rise like a vast phantom imperial army. Entire regions are overtaken by the implacable conquerors. And the empire of sand is growing, even threatening us here in Taiwan.

Sandstorms are formed by strong winds blowing across desert areas. With more than 1.74 million square kilometers of desert, China’s sandstorms are among the worst in the world and put the health of vast numbers at risk: In 2004, 60 million people in seven provinces and 171 cities were affected.

The storms are not limited to China, however. Since 1999, they have been a serious threat to the environment in Taiwan. In fact, when they occur, the air becomes so saturated with sand and contaminants that breathing outdoors is dangerous. For safety, the Taiwan government monitors the storms and issues appropriate warnings. Please heed them and stay indoors on the worst days.

To deal with sandstorms, China is building a wall around its desert regions. Called the “Great Green Wall,” the barrier, which will consist of 77,000 square kilometers of planted trees, is expected to help reduce the intensity of sandstorms. Let’s just hope that this new Great Wall will do a better job than the original at keeping out the enemy!
