In the world of American journalism, no prize carries more weight than the Pulitzer. The prestigious prize is named after Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911), who stands as the very symbol of solid American journalism.

A Hungarian immigrant, Pulitzer worked as a mule tender, waiter and hack driver before becoming a journalist. He slowly made his way up, eventually becoming a successful newspaper publisher. In his newspapers, Pulitzer fought against government corruption and advocated investigative reporting. “Every issue of the paper presents an opportunity and a duty to say something courageous and true,” he once said.

Pulitzer believed that journalists should never tolerate injustice, always be independent, and attack what is wrong. He was also a visionary who hoped to attract more young people to journalism. He wished not only to teach reporting skills, but also to instill moral integrity in the trade.

About writing a good news story, he once said, “Put it before them (readers) briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.”

Writing his will in 1904, Pulitzer made preparations for the prize that would be his legacy. Through it, he wanted to ensure that even after his death, the very best in American Journalism would continue to be recognized and encouraged.

First awarded in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize is given to people whose storiesprovideimportant insights into our world. It is, first and foremost, a humanitarian award.

Over the years, many talented journalists have been awarded the Pulitzer. Seymour Hersh earned worldwide recognition for his reporting on the March 1968 My Lai massacre, in which American soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians. Columnist Thomas L. Friedman of the New York Times won the award for his often controversial look at the difficult situation in the Middle East.

More than just journalism, the prize has several categories, including fiction, music, and drama. In fiction, John Steinbeck and Philip Roth are members of the select group of prize-winning writers. In their easily recognizable language, they take a brutally honest look at American society, and serve as inspiration to newer generations of writers. In 1997, African-American Wynton Marsalis became the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize in music for Blood on the Field, an oratorio on slavery.

Long after Pulitzer departed from the scene, his support for and belief in the value of journalistic excellence and integrity is stronger than ever. With the expansion of the awards into new fields, Pulitzer’s humanitarian spirit lives on.
