Two of the worst tornadoes to ever hit Oklahoma tore through the state recently, killing over forty people. The first tornado passed near the town of Moore. Less than two weeks later another massive tornado appeared in the nearby town of EI Reno. The latter had a record-breaking width of more than 2.6 miles. The National Weather Service listed both tornadoes as Category 5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which classifies tornadoes from zero to five, with five being the most devastating.
Oklahoma has more tornadoes than anywhere else on Earth because it sits between the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico. In transition seasons, the cold air from the Rockies and warm air from the Gulf meet Oklahoma’s strong winds to create the ideal conditions for tornadoes to form.
With the transition season having passed, the residents of Oklahoma are now trying to rebuild their homes. While modern technology can accurately track tornadoes, it’s still anyone’s guess when and where these deadly storms will appear.
