Scientists are currently studying Iceland’s volcanoes to improve warning systems for eruptions in order to potentially save many lives. Researchers in the FutureVolc project are placing monitors near Iceland’s most active volcanoes. The project was formed in response to the 2010 eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which spewed so much ash into the air that most planes flying over Europe had to be grounded.

The project is being headed up by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) and the University of Iceland. These researchers will be joined by seismologists from 26 other groups, and will study data relayed by sensors near volcanoes on the island. The sensors can sense very small amounts of movement and measure gas levels that could indicate a possible eruption.

All this data aims to improve warning systems so that people can be evacuated much earlier than is currently possible. Dr. Kristin Vogfjord, director of research at the IMO, said that some warning systems only give people one or two hours to flee. In the future, improved warning systems could give people in Iceland days or weeks to get to safety.
