Tokyo Comes Out on Top in 2020 Olympic Bid

Despite ongoing concerns about the effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Tokyo won its bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. The Tokyo team was led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose final speech sealed the deal. Japan’s capital city has some experience with the Olympics, as it hosted the Summer Games in 1964.

Abe assured the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that the Fukushima radiation leak is “under control” and “will never do any damage to Tokyo.” He even made himself personally responsible for the health and safety of all Olympic guests. Although there are still questions about how Japan will resolve its environmental crisis, the IOC had greater concern about the losing candidates’ ability to host the games.

Coming in second and third to Tokyo in the final voting were Madrid, Spain, and Istanbul, Turkey. Spain’s high unemployment and poor financial standing worried judges. Turkey’s political turmoil and nearness to the Syrian civil war also turned votes toward Japan. In the end, the IOC felt most confident in Tokyo’s ability to deliver a spectacular Olympic Games.
