On a busy Saturday afternoon, the luxurious Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, became a scene of terror. Two groups of masked gunmen rushed into the building and began shooting at shoppers. The chaos continued for several days, as the terrorists held hostages and refused to speak to police.

Al-Shabaab, a violent Islamist group based in Somalia, took responsibility for the deadly operation. The attackers ended up killing 61 people and injuring 175 more before fighting to the death with Kenyan Defense Forces. Several of the victims were from foreign countries.

Kenya became a major target of al-Shabaab in 2011, when the country sent soldiers into Somalia to join an African Union mission to fight the Islamist group. The mall attack had a clear religious motivation, as victims could hear gunmen yelling for all Muslims to leave the scene. After the tragic event finally came to a close, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the shocked public. He said, “We have overcome terrorist attacks before. We will defeat them again.”
