Angela Merkel is well on her way to making history after being elected Chancellor of Germany for the third time this September. Her conservative party, the Christian Democrats, won about 41.5 percent of the votes in the election. That is the best election result for the party since 1990. The 59-year-old Merkel now ranks among the most powerful female politicians in history.

Merkel was first elected in 2005, and the victory extends her term in office to 2017. That will make her history’s longest-serving elected female leader of a government. Yet Merkel’s legacy won’t be in how long she’s served, but in how she’s led Germany and managed Europe’s economic crisis.

Merkel is in challenging situation, as many European countries are heavily in debt and need Germany’s help. Reporters have commented that Merkel is deliberate and rational when dealing with these countries and Germany’s domestic problems. They say she works methodically because of her science background. Those are qualities that political observers say are necessary for her to navigate Europe’s economic mess.
