Taiwanese Working More but Paid Less

Taiwanese people are working more than ever, but making less money than people in many other countries. The numbers come from a survey conducted by the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) It found that the average Taiwanese has a monthly salary of about US$1,549. By comparison, workers in Singapore make about US$3,547 a month.

The study found that Singaporeans worked 2,402 hours each in 2012. That means they each made about US$17.72 an hours. In contrast, Taiwanese worked 2,140 hours each in 2012, the third highest in the survey. Yet, they made US$8.69 an hour, which means Singaporeans earned twice as much. The CLA mostly surveyed employers, though. Thus, the hours worked by Taiwanese could be higher than what was reported.

Many Taiwanese now suffer from work fatigue and poverty, said Sun You-Lien (孙友联), secretary general of the Taiwan Labor Front (台湾劳工阵线). In addition, many are seeking work overseas, especially in China. To combat the dilemma, Taiwan’s government must improve the nation’s international competitiveness to promote salary growth and avoid brain drain, said CLA Minister Pan Shih-Wei (潘世伟).
