Oscar Diggs, a circus magician who cheats people out of their money, performs tricks for a living. However, the most amazing trick will be played on him this time. After cheating people too often, Oscar runs from trouble in a hot air balloon but is magically transported from his hometown in Kansas to the Land of Oz.

The people of Oz mistake Oscar for a wizard and expect him to help them stop the Wicked Witch from trying to take over the land. However, there are three young witches that don’t believe he knows magic at all. Oscar must use illusions, magic tricks and skill on his journey to become a better person, fight evil and turn himself into the Wizard of Oz.

The film is set prior to the events of the original book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum. After Baum wrote his first Oz book, it quickly became one of the most well-known stories in American popular culture. Now, Oz: The Great and Powerful is aiming to be just as popular as the original story.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is considered a prequel to the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, but will tell the story from Oscar’s perspective. In the 1939 film version, Dorothy Gale is sent from Kansas to Oz and must meet the Wizard of Oz to get back home. This time, the audience follows the origins of Oscar Diggs as he struggles to become the Wizard of Oz that Dorothy later seeks.
《奥兹大帝》被视为是1939年电影《绿野仙踪》的前传，但是将从主角奥斯卡的观点来叙述整个故事。在1939年的电影版本里，桃乐丝从堪萨斯被送到奥兹王国，并且必须要见到奥兹大帝才能成功返家。这一次，观众跟随着奥斯卡的源起，见证他努力成为桃乐丝后来所寻找的奥兹大帝。
The film will tip its hat to the original movie with its opening sequence. Director Sam Raimi said he will imitate the beginning of The Wizard of Oz, which starts in black and white and becomes a color movie when Dorothy travels to Oz.
