The Pacific Ocean sits in relative calm, its waters undisturbed. Suddenly, the waves give way as a gargantuan beast slowly rises from the water before letting out a terrible roar. It’s a Kaiju, an alien that has come to the Earth through a hidden portal to another planet. The world’s nations control huge robots, called Jaegers, to combat the alien threat. The Kaiju are winning the war and are on the verge of wiping out mankind, when former pilot Raleigh Becket and Jaeger trainee Mako Mori are chosen as the world’s final hope.

Pacific Rim is an action movie in the vein of the classic Godzilla films from Japan which were produced for 50 years straight. The makers of Pacific Rim aim to bring the genre, which originally had men in clumsy rubber suits playing the monsters, kicking and screaming into the 21^st century. The film will try to thrill fans of action, and speak directly to the inner child in anyone who grew up watching massive robots and gigantic creatures do battle.

《环太平洋》是一部与来自日本、已有50年历史的哥吉拉系电影有着相同特色的动作片。《环太平洋》的制作团队目标是将这种原本要人类穿着笨拙橡胶戏服扮演怪兽的电影类型，一路又踢又吼地进入21世纪。此部电影试图掀起动作影迷高昂贵的情绪，并与看着大型机器人与巨怪战斗长大的人们心中的孩子直接对话。

Pacific Rim takes place in a not-so-distant future, when humans have engineered giant robots to fight in war and are forced to use them against the huge aliens invading the planet. The film features advanced computer-generated animation to bring its bizarre creatures and robots to life. Since director Guillermo del Toro said he didn’t want to copy similar films, Pacific Rim won’t be a tribute to giant monster movies of the past. Instead, del Toro wanted to create something fresh and original.

《环太平洋》时间设定在不远后的未来，人类设计战争用的巨型机器人，并且被迫使用它们来对抗入侵地球的外星物种。这部电影的特色是使用先进计算机动画让奇特的生物及机器人栩栩如生。导演葛雷摩．戴托罗表示他并不希望复制类似的电影，因此《环太平洋》不会是对过往的巨型怪物电影致敬的作品。相反地，戴托罗希望创造出新颖的元素。

While the Godzilla films were about the threat of nuclear war, Pacific Rim imagines how the world would react politically to a global menace. In the film, there are five Jaegers from five different countries: the US, China, Russia, Australia, and Japan. Raleigh Becket is American, while his co-pilot Mako Mori is Japanese. The alien invasion has forced these allies to work together or else humanity will be no more. Pacific Rim’s grand scale serves as a backdrop to demonstrate the need for international unity in the hopes that we work together to survive in the future.

哥吉拉系列电影与核能战争的威胁有关，而《环太平洋》则假想世界会对全球性的危害作出什么样的政策。电影中共有五具贼鸥机器人，分别来自美国、中国、俄罗斯、澳洲及日本。莱利．贝克特是美国人，而与他搭档驾驶的毛利麻子则是日本人。外星物种的入侵迫使这些同盟国必须要连手合作，否则人类则会灭亡。《环太平洋》以宏观的规模为背景，阐述各国团结的必要性，期望人类在未来能够互助以求生存。
