At the end of the last movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Wizard, and the dwarves escaped from evil orcs after being in great danger. Little did they know that there were many more adventures to come. Bigger challenges were waiting for Bilbo and his companions.

In The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the expedition must pass through the dark forest of Mirkwood to reach the Lonely Mountain for their ultimate goal: getting back the dwarves’ treasure. On the way, they’ll meet the elves of Mirkwood, the men of Lake Town, and a strange man named Beorn who can turn into a huge bear. But the most important new character is Smaug the Dragon.

在电影《哈比人：荒谷恶龙》中，远征队为了达到最终目标：夺回矮人族的宝藏，他们必须穿越黑暗森林「幽暗密林」以抵达孤山。在途中他们将会遇上幽暗密林的精灵族、河谷镇的人类，以及可以变身成巨熊的奇特人类「比翁」。然而最重要的角色是巨龙史矛革。

Bilbo must now step up and become a leader, as Gandalf has to leave the party on business of his own. Since Bilbo owns a ring that can make him invisible, the dwarves ask him to go alone into the mountain to face Smaug. Will he be able to overcome his greatest fear and save everyone from the fire-breathing dragon?

J.R.R. Tolkien didn’t set out to be a fantasy author. He was a respected language professor at Oxford University. One day, while he was grading some exams, Tolkien seized a blank piece of paper and wrote the first sentence of The Hobbit. As he developed the story, Tolkien linked it to the poems and tales he wrote during World War I.

J.R.R.托尔金一开始并没有打算要成为奇幻故事作家。他在牛津大学是一位受到尊敬的语言学教授。某一天，当托尔金正在批改一些试卷时，他抓取一张空白的纸张写下小说《哈比人》的第一个句子。当托尔金继续发展这则故事时，他结合了自己在第一次世界大战期间所撰写的诗与故事。

Tolkien certainly never expected his book to be popular or to become a movie. For the big screen, director Peter Jackson and his team divided The Hobbit into three parts. The Desolation of Smaug is the second, though all three movies were filmed in New Zealand at the same time.

托尔金肯定没有预料自己的书会受到欢迎或是被拍成电影。导演彼得．杰克森与他的团队将小说《哈比人》分成三部曲《荒谷恶龙》是第二集，不过三部电影都是同一时间在纽西兰拍摄。

The movie makes use of some impressive technology. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch plays both Smaug and the Necromancer－the dark power that controls all the evil creatures in Middle-earth. To bring these characters to life, Cumberbatch wore a motion-capture suit that allowed his movements to bring Smaug and the Necromancer to life. With these amazing special effects and its exciting story, the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug aims to take its viewers into a world of excitement and adventure.
