In the seventh lunar month, the Hakka hold a festival to honor the heroes of Taiwan’s past, known as Yimin (义民). The center of this worship is the Xinpu (新埔) Yimin Temple in Hsinchu. There, people burn incense and offer food to the ghosts of their warrior ancestors.

In 1786, Lin Shuangwen (林爽文) led insurgents against the Qing government, causing heavy casualties. To protect their land, more than a thousand Hakka teamed up to help the government successfully defeat Lin’s army. After the rebellion, over 200 dead Hakka fighters were buried at Xinpu. This location became the site of what is now the largest and oldest Yimin Temple in Taiwan.

The Yimin Festival begins with lanterns being raised as a signal for the ghosts. The next day, lanterns are floated down the nearby river to make a glowing path for the ghosts to follow. On the final day, people present great feasts of lamb and giant pigs to feed the Yimin spirits. This ceremony lets the Hakka remember their history and maintain cultural traditions.
