Life in Taiwan isn’t complete without the occasional visit to a night market. These places satisfy your needs for fresh lime juice, fried octopus balls, pig’s blood cake, or whatever else you desire. But night market vendors sell more than just food. Shoppers also wander through the aromatic alleys in search of trendy T-shirts, sneakers, and other fashion accessories.
在台湾生活如果没有偶尔去逛逛夜市就不算是完整。夜市能够满足你对新鲜莱姆汁、花枝丸、猪血糕或是任何食物的渴望。但夜市的摊贩并非只卖吃的。顾客也会穿梭于香气四溢的小巷里寻找时髦的T恤、球鞋以及流行饰品。
Although the name brands and international cuisines for sale give night markets a cosmopolitan atmosphere, they are not a modern phenomenon. About 200 years ago, Taiwanese peddlers began setting up shop in the evening next to places of worship. As more peddlers settled, the markets eventually became permanent. Snake Alley (华西街夜市) near Longshan Temple is a perfect example.
虽然各种名牌和异国美食带给夜市一种国际化的氛围，但其实夜市并不是一个新潮的产物。大约200年前，台湾的小贩们晚上便会在祭祀庙会旁摆摊。而当越来越多的摊贩聚集之后，夜市也就成型了。龙山寺附近的华西街夜市就是一个完美的例子。
There are now more than 100 night markets in the country. The most famous one is Shilin Market (士林夜市), which bustles with crowds every night. Taichung’s Fengjia Market (逢甲夜市) was the first to sell bubble tea. And the recently built Jinzhuan Market (金钻夜市) in Kaohsiung is said to be Taiwan’s largest. Nothing in the world can match the tasty snacks and energetic atmosphere these places offer.
这个国家里有超过100座夜市。其中最有名的当属每晚都人山人海的士林夜市。台中的逢甲夜市则是第一个开始贩卖珍珠奶茶的夜市。而最近才盖好的高雄金钻夜市据说是台湾最大的夜市。世界上再也没有什么能与这些夜市里美味的小吃和热闹的氛围相匹敌的了。
