Sloan and Rachel work together at a pet store. Sloan is cleaning one of the cat’s cages.
S: Get a load of this cat. It’s going like a power generator.
R: Maybe she’s been into the catnip, or maybe she likes you.
S: Is that what it means when they purr?
R: From what I could find on the Net, we still don’t really know why cats purr. It’s a bite of a scientific anomaly, kind of like Michael Jackson’s skin.
S: Very funny. I’ve noticed that mothers purr a lot when they’re near their young.
R: That makes sense. When kittens are just born, their eyes are still shut, and their sense of smell is poor. They can only go by sound and touch.
S: I guess purring can help kittens find their mothers more easily.
R: Probably, but I still like the idea that they purr because they feel good.
S: Well, whatever the reason, this cat is going to wake up all the other animals if it doesn’t let up with this purring soon.
R: Maybe she thinks you’re her mother.
S: Well, this mother wants her baby to be quiet and go to sleep. Know any good lullabies?
R: How about a tune by Cat Stevens?
