Safety Comes First
Managers are always on the lookout for ways to improve productivity, but few realize that this can be accomplished simply by keeping everyone happy. Effective personnel management means creating a safe and positive work environment so that both management and workers can work together with minimal stress. Happier employees tend to be more creative and productive, which, in turn, can only serve to boost company profits.
Although it may be impossible to ensure a completely safe workplace, employers must show genuine concern for worker safety and endeavor to eliminate hazards. Accidents don’t just happen; they’re mostly caused by accident-prone people who can be screened out early on, as they tend to be scornful toward rules and warnings, impatient, and abrupt.
Rules must be followed, for everyone’s sake. Since 95 percent of employees conduct themselves reasonably, managers should encourage self-discipline rather than rely on direct control; however, should a worker violate the rules, he or she must be dealt with promptly and fairly. Management who discipline inconsistently only earns disrespect.
Once the rules and regulations have been established, it’s imperative that management lead by example – if managers waltz into work two hours late every morning, why should the other employees be punctual?

A Helping Hand
When a member of staff consistently break company rules, it may be time for counseling. This involves just sitting someone down, in a setting that lends itself to conversation, and discussing the problem as a means toward finding a solution.

The stresses and strains of today’s fast-paced business world can often lead to substance abuse, which is now so widespread that it accounts for two-thirds of work-counseled personal problems. The best that a manager can do in such a situation is help the employee seek professional guidance.
Managers are perpetual counselors: Oftentimes, counseling involves merely listening to employees’ gripes; other times, it may involve dealing with crises such as redundancy or illness. But safety and counseling produce happier workers—and, as that increases productivity, shareholders are all smiles, too.
