The Paralympic Games – Proven Olympic Spirit

Not to be confused with the Special Olympics, the Paralympic Games are a world-class competition for elite athletes with disabilities. Athletes from over 160 countries have battled for the gold in this parallel Olympics since 1960. Competitors are arranged according to the type and severity of their disability to ensure competitive parity.

Unfortunately, though coordinated and held alongside the Olympics, the Paralympics receive virtually no television coverage. This is a sad loss for sports fans, because Paralympians, perhaps the “True Olympians,” compete outside the influence of commercialism and professionalism. Thankfully, the 2004 Paralympics will receive Internet coverage, provided by WeMedia, which will highlight the best in events like wheelchair rugby, basketball, archery, and more.

This year, watch for the blind Kenyan runner, Henry Wanyoike. He’s going for the 5,000m world record that he narrowly missed in Sydney 2000 when his guide, tethered to him, struggled with dehydration in the last fifty meters. However, nothing stopped Wanyoike from competing in the 2003 and 2004 Boston Marathons.

The Paralympics emphasize the high athletic caliber of its participants. Competitors adhere to out-of-competition drug testing and regulations similar to those of their Olympic counterparts. The Paralympics showcase the power of the human spirit, and prove that disability is not inability.

Clark and Louise are watching wheelchair basketball from the Athens Summer Games on Clark’s computer:

L: When you invited me to watch basketball, I didn’t expect the Special Olympics.

C: Uh uh. This is the Paralympics. Wonderful as they are, the Special Olympics aren’t truly competitive. These games feature elite athletes with various levels of disability.

L: You’re not kidding. This is full-on Olympic-level sporting. Look at that pick and roll! That hoop’s still at Olympic regulation height, right?

C: Yup. It’s similar to the walking game of basketball, and these players are Dream Team members in their own right.

L: What’s with the webcast? Can’t we watch this on the tube?

C: Unfortunately, the Paralympics don’t get nearly the same coverage, even though the two games have essentially integrated since the `88 Seoul Olympics. Here’s a webcast program.

L: What a shame! Just look at the athleticism! Hmmm …. according to the program, they have most of the same events as the mainstream Olympics. Right on. Judo and swimming are coming up. I love those events.

C: And you gotta check out the sprinting for this Nigerian, Ajibola Adoeve. He’s an amputee, but his best time in the 100m dash is nine-tenths of a second off the Olympic record!

L: Talk about true Olympics spirit.
