While Lucinda’s preschool students are napping, she and Bill, an education student taking a field practicum, go over his lesson plans:
L: This looks good – except for the science lesson: growing beans in a jar isn’t very stimulating.
B: I’m nervous about trying anything other than an old stand-by; science isn’t my forte.
L: Science was never my long suit in school, either, so when I first started teaching science to my students, I felt like a total charlatan. The trick, however, is to realize that kids are natural scientists.
B: They are always inquisitive, like this morning: Penny asked me why flushed water goes down clockwise; and Josh noticed how, when he has a cold, his nasal mucus turns green!
L: Because of children’s natural curiosity, it’s easy to incorporate science into other lessons; it enhances their understanding of both subjects.
B: Like during the art class when we made strings of popcorn?
L: Right. I knew the kids would be excited about the popcorn, and it was the perfect opportunity to teach them about why the kernels explode when heated.
B: Hands-on experience really is the way to go: I’ve learned way more during this practicum than I ever did from any book.

Later in the week, while the preschoolers are eating lunch, Lucinda takes a moment to congratulate Bill on his teaching:
B: All those questions the kids had in the park this morning made me dizzy!

B: Thanks. Billy and Hannah were awfully interested in the anthill there.
