Fran’s secretary, Dirk, pokes his head round her door
D: How goes the battle?
F: It goes — how about another coffee? I’ve got twenty minutes before my next interviewee arrive.
D: More, if he’s like the last guy—I can’t believe anyone’s show up late to an interview!
F: It doesn’t help in the first impressions department. But at least he was well-groomed: nicely pressed clothes; neat, conservative hair; clean nails.
D: Unlike your ten thirty—does our ad say we’re looking for Erin Brockovich? The makeup! Those stilettos!
F: Punctuality and appearance are the least of it: my eleven forty-five didn’t know anything about our company.
D: He just parachuted in?
F: Yep. He should have done some homework: the more you know about a company, the better you can understand exactly what it’s looking for.
D: And tailor your approach accordingly. Now, I remember when I had my interview?
F: Ego need stroking? Yes, yours was great: you knew all about the company, but, more importantly, you knew yourself.
D: I’ll let you in on a little secret: I thought about my five strongest attributes and how I would say them—and then I practiced my spiel for hours!
F: And here’s my little secret: I’m still waiting for that coffee!

Sheila has come to Fran’s office for an interview and just announced her arrival to Dirk:
D: Sheila Watts? ….. You’re Ms. Brussels’s last interview of the day—and you’re early!
S: I always try to be: no one likes to hear excuses about bad traffic.

D: Say, are you all right?

D: Good analogy—interviews are sort of like auditions.

S: And, funnily enough, I’ve been practicing my lines; I thought about all the questions I was likely to be asked and drew up a script of appropriate answers.

S: Yes—no rambling on about my hobbies; I’ll tell her about the skills and experiences I have that are relevant to the job. It’s hard enough getting your foot in the door; I wouldn’t want to blow everything by boring the interviewer.
D: For what it’s worth, you sound like you’ll do just fine. Now go in there and break a leg!
