Your whirlwind tour of Europe has taken you to some amazing places: England, France, Switzerland, and Germany. Today you’re off to Austria: in particular, the old city of Salzburg.
After a quick crossing of the Austrian-Germany border, you find yourself in a city that has often been called the “Gateway to the Alps.” You’re looking forward to touring the Lake District, just outside the city itself. The natural landscape in the district is so exquisite that the Austrian emperors often spent their summers there. But first, it’s time to learn a little about Salzburg’s history.
Originally a Roman town, Salzburg became the center of the European salt industry in the eighth century – hence the name, Salzburg, which means Salt-city. The city has suffered little over the centuries from war or natural disasters, and so much of its architecture remains in great condition. This is obvious on any stroll through the city streets: old, gorgeous buildings are everywhere! Many of the buildings were built in the baroque style. This eighteenth-century style of architecture is noted for the use of curving lines, bold ornamentation, and detailed interiors. One of the best examples is the magnificent Salzburg Cathedral, which looks more like an elaborate castle than a church.
In the early evening you visit the Mirabell Gardens. They’ve become pretty famous because of a certain movie, and tomorrow, you will make arrangements to see that movie. But now, it’s time for bed, and pleasant dreams.

After an early breakfast, you set out on your second day of sightseeing in Salzburg. First call, Mozart’s Wohnhaus, the residence of the world’s most famous composer. On a tour of the building, you see the harpsichords and clavichords Mozart used when composing his music. You also learn of Mozart’s struggles with ill health and his early death at the age of thirty-five. Like many people, you believed Mozart was killed by arival musician. But this turns out to be false – he died of a common disease.
Mozart’s music takes center stage at the annual Salzburg Music Festival which begins today. The festival dates back to the 1920s and features performances not only of classical music but drama as well. Performances are held in splendid old venues, such as a seventeenth-century Riding School, and the residential palace of the archbishop.
Evening approaches and it’s time to hit the movie theaters! The Sound of Music, whichwas set in Salzburg, is playing. The movie tells the story of Maria Von-Trapp, a Salzburg nun who left the convent to marry an aristocrat. Like Mozart, the movie is world famous, and today places like Mirabell Gardens, where the Von-Trapp kids sang the famous Do-Re-Mi song, draw big crowds.
Do-Re-Mi is one of those songs you’ve never been able to forget. And Salzburg, you are starting to realize, is a city you will never forget either.
