Steven Soderbergh, director of Oscar-winning movies Traffic and Erin Brokovich and the hugely popular Ocean’s Eleven, brings his creative talent to Solaris, a futuristic love story set within the framework of a space mission gone horribly wrong. George Clooney plays Dr. Chris Kelvin, a psychologist enlisted to investigate the mysterious happenings on Prometheus, a research space station examining a mysterious planet – Solaris – but whose small crew of scientists has cut off all communication with Earth.

Prometheus’s mission commander, Gibarian, played by German actor Ulrich Tukur, is a close friend of Kelvin’s. In his final communiqué, Gibarian appears to be deeply troubled, pleading for Kelvin’s help aboard the ill-fated space vessel, but reluctant – or unable – to explain why. Kelvin responds to the plea but arrives to make a shocking discovery: Gibarian has committed suicide, and his fellow scientists, gripped by paranoia, appear to be heading toward the same fate. Is their lengthy isolation to blame, or is there more to Solaris than meets the eye?

Whatever this strange phenomenon is that’s affecting the crew, it begins to draw Kelvin into its sway, hampering his investigation and forcing the psychologist to question whether events are real or in his mind – or both.

Trapped in Solaris’s complex world, Kelvin is seemingly presented with a second chance at love – to alter the course of a failed marriage that has long been the source of the psychologist’s inner turmoil. But can Kelvin really change what has passed, or will destiny inevitably lead him to repeat his mistakes?

Natascha McElhone, of Truman Show fame, plays Kelvin’s beloved but troubled – and deceased – wife, Rheya, whose death sometime previous continues to haunt the distraught doctor. All of Kelvin’s experiences in Solaris’s proximity are inextricably interwoven with this doomed relationship. Together, Clooney and McElhone play out a deeply moving, psychedelic love story, in what is Soderbergh’s first stab at the science-fiction genre.

The movie is a remake of a 1972 Russian film, itself an adaptation of the novel of the same name by acclaimed Polish science-fiction writer Stanislaw Lem. Soderbergh borrows much from both the novel and the earlier movie, but focuses more on the love aspect and the frustration Kelvin experiences in trying to unlock the secrets of a planet which is also scrutinizing him.

本片改编自1972年的俄国电影，原著则是广受赞誉的波兰科幻作家史丹尼斯劳赖的同名小说。索德柏多半取材自原著及前部影片，但他的焦点则更偏重于爱情与凯文的挫折感──他想解开这座星球的秘密，然而这座星球也在检视他。
