Katherine Hepburn, who died in June 2003, aged 96, was one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses. Winning four Oscars over a career that spanned seven decades, she is perhaps best remembered for her role alongside Humphrey Bogart in the 1951 classic, The African Queen.
At the tender age of 26, Katherine Hepburn won her first Oscar for Morning Glory (1933), her third film. An intelligent, forthright, and fiercely independent woman, Hepburn’s image stood in stark contrast to the coquettish complacency that marked other feminine idols of her time, much to the chagrin of Hollywood studio executives. She refused interviews, shooed away autograph hounds, and kept her private life exactly that: private.
Hepburn’s romances were as independent as her film personae. Following a brief marriage in the early 1930s, Hepburn had a four-year affair with billionaire Howard Hughes. But the love of her life was actor Spencer Tracy, who she met while making Woman of the Year (1942). Tracy, a devout Catholic, wouldn’t divorce his first wife, so the couple never married. Nevertheless, their unconventional relationship lasted until Tracy’s death in 1967.
Katherine Hepburn had no children, and once said that the three things she most cared about were Spencer Tracy, her privacy, and her career, in roughly that order.

T: What an actress that Katherine Hepburn was! Did you notice her shaking in the film?
S: Yeah, she suffered from Parkinson’s disease towards the end of her life. But that subtle palsy just seemed to underscore her dignified aging. She really deserved her fourth Oscar for that role.
T: Have you seen her comedy Bringing Up Baby? It’s hilarious. Whether it was drama or comedy, her style lent itself to both.
S: Apparently, she missed out on the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind because she was too strong-willed and independent.

T: Well, she had a strong role model in her mother, who was a well-known suffragette.
S: And her romance with Spencer Tracy sure raised some eyebrows. Back then, it was almost unheard of for celebrities to openly live in sin.
