Casablanca continues to evoke images of bittersweet love thwarted by a world gone mad. Set in WW II– when neutral Morocco was an exotic crossroads for Nazis, resistance fighters, and Casbah scoundrels – Casablanca’s enduring appeal remains its intense, dialogue-driven scenes reflecting a world-weary yet hopeful attitude. This attitude is as resonant today as it was to wartime audiences.

Humphrey Bogart, as Rick, and Ingrid Bergman, as Ilsa, are remembered both for their classic performances as tragic lovers and for their beautifully scripted, taut lines. Director Michael Curtiz exploited the natural series of actions and reactions within each scene, called the beat, to gradually build emotional intensity to dramatic climaxes.

In the famous “Lingerie Vendor” scene, Ilsa and Rick meet in the market after fighting the night before. Over the course of eleven beats, Rick goes from apologizing, to learning the truth about Ilsa’s married past, to being crushed by the possibility that Ilsa never loved him during their earlier relationship. The movement from a scene of hope at the scene’s outset to Rick’s despair at the scene’s close creates a complete emotional transition.

Chris and his girlfriend Jane have just watched Casablanca on a Sunday night. Jane has recently had her hair dyed blonde:  克里斯和他的女友珍妮刚在星期日晚上看了「北非谍影」。珍妮最近把她的头发染成金发：
