Eve and rob are talking about the new movie critic in their local paper:
R: Hey, did you see what the new critic wrote about that new movie? It was scathing and harsh!
E: But she’s pretty much on the money when she says too many movies these days are just style over substance. And the films are often so predictable.
R: Well, a compelling story line is never bad. I hate it when I can guess what’s going to happen in a film.
E: That new critic believes a good story is more important than slick special effects.
R: Yeah, but the special effects in films like Harry Potter and Pearl Harbor are so awesome!
E: Well, Harry Potter had a good story, but Pearl Harbor’s plot was pretty lame.
R: I don’t care. I still like films like Hannibal where body parts are flying and the blood is flowing!
E: But if you see all that blood and guts, where’s the tension and suspense? Nothing is left to the imagination.
R: That’s true. Hey, remember the films Hollywood used to make? Hitchcock’s Psycho scared the life out of me and there wasn’t much violent on-screen.
E: Exactly! The tension and suspense came from what wasn’t shown.
R: And the surprise ending really blew me away. I guess sometimes less is more.

Eve and Rob continue to discuss movies and the new movie critic.
R: I get the feeling that, as well as big Hollywood blockbusters, this critic also doesn’t like a lot of Hollywood stars.
E: Just because a person gets a lot of money for a film doesn’t mean he or she is a good actor. Gwyneth Paltrow couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag.
R: Yeah, but she sure looks great.
E: What did I say about style over substance?
R: Hey, there are some good actors out there worth the millions they get. Just look at Tom Hanks.
E: Now, he really is a good actor, even if he’s never been in an independent film.
R: Just because a film has a small budget doesn’t mean it’s a better film.
E: That new critic seems to be more into art house flicks.
R: I think if you go see a film, you should see it because you want to. Who cares what some critic says? If I go see a film, I’ll decide for myself if it has an interesting story, good acting, good suspense, realistic, special effects, whatever….
E: Well, that’s the things: it really is up to the individual. Sure, you can read movie reviews but, ultimately, it’s your decision as to what’s makes a film good.
R: I couldn’t agree with you more!
