Lounge bars first emerged in the heady days of the late fifties; when affluent urban socialites were looking for a chic alternative to the jazz cabaret or the rock ‘n’ roll showroom. In these establishments, the emphasis was on the design, often a Polynesian tiki look or an ultramodern space age look as much as on kitschy, light jazz and ornate, costly cocktails. The stereotypically suave “lounge lizards” emerged from this milieu.
The charms of lounge culture were overlooked amidst the riotous disco of the seventies and punk of the eighties. Yet the lounge bar resurfaced in the late eighties as venues for “chilling-out” to electronic music without the sweaty madness of dance raves. This new era of lounge music is epitomized in compilations like Buddha Bar and Café del Mar, and also in the work of club DJs like Mark Farina.
Today, the lounge bar is as popular as ever. Around the world, lounge lizards seeking to see and be seen recline on plush velvet couches, sipping overpriced martinis. Taiwan is no exception. Lounge bars have emerged as one of Taiwan’s most popular nightlife venues. To find a lounge bar, online guides such as http://www.taiwanfun.com are helpful, but word-of-mouth remains the surest guide to nightlife chic.
