Janis greets her friend Mick in downtown Taichung:

J: Hey Mick, what are you carrying?

M: A bass guitar. My band are playing Spring Scream Lamb this year over Chingming weekend in Kenting.

J: Wow, cool. Do you guys have a record contract?

M: Oh, no, we’re not quite that accomplished. Most of the bands at Spring Scream are amateurs, but some past acts have gone professional.

J: Right, like Sticky Rice or MC Hot Dog. I haven’t attended the festival yet. How’s the vibe?

M: Awesome. It’s inexpensive, casual and people can check out bands at any of the three stages.

J: I read on their website that it’s a unique festival in Asia because it’s more than music, but also dancers, performers, skateboarders and craftspeople.

M: You got it. Taiwan doesn’t have many venues for amateurs and alternative styles of music, but Spring Scream is like a great explosion of the creativity that lies under the surface of Taiwan.

J: Well, what kinds of music can I hear?

M: Mostly rock and popular music – some loud and heavy, but some quite mellow – and funky hip-hop. Also, you can anticipate one of the only genuine mosh pit experiences in Taiwan.

J: Count me in this year. But what the heck is a mosh pit?

M: I could explain but you’ll need to see that to believe it!
