Imagine that you’ve just received a large overseas order. This is certainly good news, but consider that while you’re piling up expenses to get the order out, not a single penny will come in. Furthermore, international buyers generally expect to defer payment for 30, 60, even 180 days after delivery. Exporting requires a larger investment to get a product to market, so most exporters seek financing to stabilize their cash flows.

At the same time, offering favorable payment terms to buyers is generally necessary because of the competitive nature of export markets. Indeed, in some countries, it is considered of offensive for sellers to demand cash on the barrelhead. However, attractive credit terms mean higher lending interest for exporters, which leads back to cash flow problems.

There are many financing options available from the government, commercial banks, and third parties. For example, commercial banks can make a loan directly to a buyer for a product while the exporter gets paid immediately with the loan payment. Alternatively, exporters can sell their accounts receivable (a promised payment from the customer) to a factoring house for somewhat less than its face value.

Exporters walk a fine line, balancing competitiveness with cost and security, but the potential rewards make the risk worthwhile.

Steve is golfing with his banker, Lillian:

L: Your putt, Steve. I heard through the grapevine that you’re on the verge of landing a big international order.

S: The rumors are true. The buyers will decide between us and a competitor next week. If all goes well, we’ll begin production by month’s end.

L: How are you financing this project? Self-financing a growing export business is pretty risky, you know.

S: Well, we have enough cash on hand to cover the two months of production. As long as we get payment on delivery, we should just squeak by.

L: But Steve, you’re overlooking the inherent risks of international trade. There’s inevitably transaction and shipping delays, possibly even currency fluctuations.

S: I know …. But we just can’t afford to take out another loan to finance this.

L: You can’t afford not to. As long as your clients are creditworthy and their country is politically and economically stables, then interest charges will be relatively low.

S: If you extend our line of credit, we can increase the customer’s credit period to 60 days.

L: Given your financial standing, I believe our bank can approve that. Favorable credit terms will definitely differentiate you from your competitors.

S: Which’ll make our bid a hole-in-one, even if I’ve just putt a bogey.
