Marshall and Kim, old friends, are meeting for a hotpot dinner:

M: Wassup, dawg?

K: Pardon? Dog, uh … I know they serve lamb, but I’m not sure about dog.

M: No, I mean “How are you, friend?” I’m being ill, get it?

K: Ah, is this about Ebonics, the kind of English that started with Black Americans?

M: Word.

K: Word? I think I said more than ten words. What do you mean?

M: No, uh, I mean yes, actually. “Word” means something like “I agree with what you just said.” A lot of the current youth lingo comes from hip-hop, and that’s mostly Ebonics.

K: Gotcha. Don’t you feel like a bit of a … poseur I believe is the expression?

M: Hey, I just want to know wassup in my crib.

K: “Crib”? Do you mean “home”? Don’t get too carried away with your newfound coolness, my friend.

M: OK, I can’t really get away with talking like this: I’m just trying to understand the slang my kids are using nowadays. You know, bonding with them.

K: All right, just don’t overdo it. Say Marshall, that’s a pretty phat suit you are wearing today.

M: Fat? But I thought I’d lost some weight!

K: P-H-A-T, Marshall, not F-A-T. It means “cool.” Remember, I have kids too.
