When push comes to shove, what would you do for a friend? Would you be willing to shave your head bald? If you were a friend of Andrew Gillespie, you would.

Andrew is an 18-year-old high school student in the United States. During spring break this year he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that develops around the knees of growing teenagers. To deal with the cancer, Andrew had to have surgery to remove the fibula in his right leg and also go for chemotherapy. Unfortunately, chemotherapy makes people’s hair fall out. There was only one thing to do then, Andrew thought, and that was to shave his own hair off beforehand.

Word of Andrew’s decision got around school and a few friends also decides to shave their head in solidarity. The few soon became dozens. “If he can’t have hair, why should we,” said one senior. Most of the students who shaved their heads were good friends of Andrew or fellow soccer players, but some were people he barely knew. “It really shows how unified people in the school are,” said one junior.

Andrew now is recovering from his operation and learning to live with only one good leg. It’s a tough adjustment but he refuses to let it get him down. And no matter what, he knows he doesn’t have to face his ordeal alone -- not with friends like his.
