Right, Wrong and the Subconscious
Knowing the difference between right and wrong has generally been attributed to our individual upbringing. However, new evidence shows that this knowledge may actually be innate. Research has showed that aspects of human morality, such as empathy for others, are evident in primates. With this in mind, Dr. Hauser of Harvard University has proposed that humans are born with “right” and “wrong” already embedded in their subconscious.
Dr. Hauser uses life-or-death situations to prove that quick moral decisions must be made sometimes. Because these judgments are made so quickly, they are not accessible by the conscious mind. Instead, the decisions are made subconsciously. Though this hypothesis has yet to be proven, it gives us a new way of examining the idea of “right” and “wrong.”
A new Era in American Politics
In November, 2006, the Democrats took the majority vote in mid-term polls in the Senate and House of Representatives, which signals an end to the dominance of the Republican Party. The Republicans had controlled Congress for nearly twelve years. Dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq and the policies of current President George W. Bush seemed to be the deciding factor in the vote. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the man responsible for America’s policy in Iraq, resigned almost immediately following the elections.
These results mean the end of the control once enjoyed by the President and the Republican Party. President Bush will now have to work more closely with the Democrats in shaping American policy.
