In thirst-quenching summer drinks and many tasty desserts, they are often the most important ingredient. For early sailors, they served as a vital lifeline on long sea voyages. And if you are under the weather, they just might be the one thing that can bring you back around. They are lemons, and there is more to them than just their tartflavor.

The origin of man’s use of lemons is unknown, but written records dating back to the 10th century describe Egyptians drinking lemonade. From then on, lemons have played a major role in history. The British Royal Navy stocked its ships with plenty of lemon juice because it prevented sailors from developing the dreaded disease, scurvy. High in vitamin C, lemons are also common in several home remedies. Lemon juice is thought to help fight the common cold. Usually, it is mixed with honey, salt, or ginger, depending on your taste.

Neglecting the lemon in cooking would be a great loss. It enhances the flavor of soups and sauces. It neutralizes the odor of fish, and can add zip to chicken. Furthermore, one can’t turn down desserts like lemon pie or lemon tarts. Their delightful combination of sweet and sour is hard to beat. So don’t forget the lemon. Whether you need it for your health or your taste buds, it’ll never let you down!
