When we think of the nurturing caregivers of the family, it is usually mom that comes to mind, not dad. After all, our mothers are the ones that give birth to us, provide us with food, and care for our every need in our early years. But as the animal kingdom demonstrates, nesting and nurturing isn’t just “women’s work.” In fact, for many animals, the male of the species has an incredible responsibility in the child-rearing process.
Take painted snipes for instance, where the males are the primary caregivers. They are left with the task of keeping the eggs warm and taking care of the chicks. Meanwhile, the carefree females are off flying around and courting other males!
Many different male species of fish also have active roles in parenting through a practice called mouthbrooding. After fertilizing the female’s eggs, a male mouthbrooder will scoop the eggs into his mouth and carry them around to keep them safe and warm. For weeks, the male fish sacrifices his own meals for the sake of his offspring, as he is unable to feed until the eggs have hatched. After the tiny babies have been born, the male mouthbrooder is often exhausted, and must spend quite a while regaining its energy.

With regard to parenting, however, there is one member of the animal kingdom that surely claims the title of Super Dad. Male seahorses can do something that no other male species in the world can do – they can get pregnant!
How dad ends up carrying the eggs has a lot to do with the unique seahorse courtship ritual. This lasts for several days, during which time the male and female seahorses change colors, swim side by side holding tails, and finally, dance snout to snout while slowly spiraling upward. The female then deposits her eggs into the male’s pouch, where the eggs are fertilized.
Over the next couple of weeks, the male provides the eggs with nutrients and oxygen, and even regulates the temperature in his pouch so that the seahorses-to-be can more easily adjust to seawater. Finally, the male seahorse is ready to give birth. Through a series of muscle contractions that somewhat resemble a long fit of coughs, the male will produce anywhere from 1 to 2,000 babes! Interestingly, a male seahorse can “cough up” his babies at night, and be ready to mate again the very next morning!
While human males don’t quite have the same capabilities, they can still take notes – these amazing creatures have proven that child-rearing isn’t just mom’s domain; dads have quite the nurturing instinct, too.
