What do the Great Wall of China, Yellowstone National Park, and the Great Barrier Reef have in common? They are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites – places deemed culturally or physically significant to our past, present, and future.

中国万里长城、黄石国家公园与大堡礁有什么相同点呢？它们都被联合国教育、科学及文化组织列为世界遗产，并在文化或实质意义上，对人类的过去、现在或未来都极为重要。

These remarkable locations are just a few of the 890 sites that this United Nations organization aims to protect. ___1___ The deciding factor in naming a place a UNESCO World Heritage Site is whether it constitutes a unique part of the world’s heritage and an important part of the human story.

上述非凡景点只是联合国教科文组织所致力保护的890个世界遗产之一小部份。具历史意义的建筑物与惊人的美景确实值得联合国教科文组织的关心，而一个地区是否被命名为世界遗产的决定性因素是：它是否构成世界遗产独特的一部份，与是否曾在人类历史中占重要地位。

So, how does a place become a World Heritage Site? ___2___ From here, The World Heritage Center will advise the country on narrowing down the list to create a nomination file. Sites are then visited and evaluated according to the ten selection criteria. ___3___ Finally, the sites are referred to the World Heritage Committee, which meets once a year to decide on the new entries.

那么，一个地方如何成为世界遗产呢？首先，一国编纂一份暂订名单，上列该国认为值得成为世界遗产之地点。世界遗产中心接着指导该国筛选清单并做成提名表。其后，联合国教科文组织人员将亲访该地，并以10项标准加以评估。一地至少需符合10项标准中的一项才能成为世界遗产。最后，这些地点将被提报至世界遗产委员会，他们每年开一次会来决定新的世界遗产。

The country in which the site is located has an obligation to protect the World Heritage Site. ___4___ This happened in Oman when the country reduced the size of its Arabian Oryx Sanctuary by 90 percent, damaging the conservation capabilities of the park.

___5___ It will also provide emergency funds to help save sites that fall into danger. It is hoped that with this program, the world’s wonders will be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.
