In fashion, there are few articles of clothing as versatile as blue jeans. For decades, they’ve been the universal symbol of cool. ___1___ Or, women can match them with a blouse to create the perfect party outfit. When it comes to all-purpose pants, nothing beats a pair of jeans.

Jeans are made of a cotton twill textile called denim. ___2___ It seems a bit ironic that this eternal fashion staple actually started in the mines of 19th century America, and not on the catwalk. ___3___ But over time, jeans gained popularity with the general public. In the 1950s, they became a symbol of rebellion for teens, after James Dean wore them in his classic film Rebel Without a Cause. ___4___
