What is design, and how does it relate to modern life? These questions and more are up for discussion at the 2011 International Design Alliance (IDA), which will take place October 24th-26th in Taipei. The theme of the conference is “Design at the Edges”, referring to the intersection between design and five key areas, including biotechnology, urbanism, the Internet, economic development, and international migration. These were selected for both their increasing global importance and their relevance to everyday life.
The Congress is the first such event organized by the IDA, which was founded in 2003 by design organizations from around the world working in several different fields. After receiving bids from several cities, the IDA selected Taipei to host the Congress in large part because of the city’s cultural diversity and its strong creative industries. Other considerations included Taipei’s convenient geographic location in the heart of Asia, its famous hospitality, its well-developed information industry, and its long history of literature, art, and design.
The three-day program of the Congress is packed with speeches and panel discussions featuring prominent experts and designers from different disciplines. Their presentations are intended for a wide audience, including government leaders, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and people working in fields such as science, technology, and education. Also on the schedule are various workshops, cultural activities, and visits to related sites around the city, offering something for everyone with an interest in good design!
