As you travel through Asia, the scenery, people, and cuisine may change, but there is one constant: curry! Originating in India, curry has since spread throughout Asia and on to the rest of the world.
The modern word “curry” actually comes from a southern Indian word, “Khari,” which simply refers to a spiced sauce of any kind. India, the birthplace of curry, is home to many different curry flavors. Ground mustard and ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and bay leaves are all common ingredients, and some Indian curries may contain more than 20 different spices.
After Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer, discovered a new sea route to India in 1498, European colonists from Portugal, Holland, France and Great Britain began to arrive. These colonists developed a love of curry, and began to spread the dish to the far corners of their empires and beyond.
In Thailand, curry is often quite spicy, with added ingredients of coconut milk or lemongrass. Thai curries are commonly described by their color, red or green, depending on the type of chili pepper used. The British, who enjoyed curry so much that they invented convenient curry powder during their colonial rule of India, now even use curry sauce instead of ketchup on their French fries. The Germans have something called “currywurst,” which is a dish of sausage covered with curry sauce. It seems that wherever you may roam these days, you can always get your curry fix.
